History of Estonian
Modern day Estonian derives from one of two different branches of historic Estonian, it is from the dialect spoken in Northern Estonia. The south utilised a different dialect which is now all but extinct named South Estonian.
It is estimated that there are currently just over one million native Estonian speakers, the vast majority of which reside in Estonia.
The alphabet used in Estonia is in fact based on the Latin alphabet with some references to German. In total, the alphabet has 27 characters and utilises several characters that are also found in the Finnish alphabet.
